Step Back in Time…To the winter of 1803-04

“Saturday with a Soldier” January 17th, 2026 10:00AM to 3:00 PM

Lewis and Clark Visitor Center, 100 Valmont Drive, Nebraska City, NE

If you have you ever wondered how the men of the Lewis and Clark Expedition survived cold weather when they were cooped up in one of their temporary winter forts…this is your opportunity to get a feel and a taste of it. You will experience the following:

>Costumed re-enactors telling stories of the Expedition and answering any questions you may have for them.

>Bonfires to warm yourself outside and cook your lunch to eat with the soldiers.

>Warm log cabins lit by candlelight with two large fireplaces and more reenactors explaining just how the men of the Expedition got along during that first winter together as a group of individuals which came to be known as “The Corps of Discovery”.

>S’mores fixings with roasting sticks which you can also use to roast your own hot dogs from home. We are supplying all the drinks (coffee and hot chocolate), plates, silverware.

>Bring your kids for an experience they will never forget.

>Black powder rifles and cannon demonstrations

This event is contingent on favorable weather conditions. If you have any questions please call The Lewis and Clark Visitor Center at 402-874-9900, or call Doug at 402-873-2215 for last minute updates. If conditions are favorable, we quite possibly will be able to drive our vehicles up to the fort complex to shuttle folks in. These options will assessed the day of the event. We will to our best for your particular needs. Did I mention the Cannon?!!
